Local MP Alan Mak led a House of Commons debate to mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11.

He said it was important to honour everyone who was lost, and to educate those who were too young to remember history's deadliest terrorist attack.

Mr Mak also called for inspiration to be drawn from the courage shown by so many in the face of terror.

On September 11, 2001 four passenger planes were hijacked in America.

Two were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York, a third struck the Pentagon and the fourth crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers and crew resisted the hijackers.

In less than two hours, 2,977 innocent people from more than 90 countries were murdered. Of those, 67 were British citizens.

Thousands more were injured and many survivors, emergency workers and people who took part in the recovery operation have lived with the physical and psychological consequences ever since.

Mr Mak, who has visited the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York, said: "Although the attacks took place on American soil, 9/11 was a global tragedy. Its victims came from across the world, its grief crossed borders and its consequences shaped the quarter of a century that followed.

"For those of us old enough to remember that day, the events are seared into our memory.

"But the passage of 25 years creates a new responsibility. Every child now at school was born after the attacks and many young adults have no personal memory of 9/11.

"We must ensure that future generations understand what happened, who was lost and why the attacks still matter."

Mr Mak called on the Government to examine how 9/11 is taught in schools.

"We must ensure the victims are never lost to time. That is a responsibility carried by each generation, including our generation, and one we must always honour."
