Local MP Alan Mak is backing a proposed new law to give babies the best start in life.
The 'Babies Bill' (officially the Infants, Parents and Carers Bill) would require the Government to ensure babies and children up to the age of two, and their parents and carers, have midwifery checks and health visits.
It would also guarantee access to help such as preparation for parenthood, infant feeding support and parental mental health support.
The Bill is being introduced by New Forest MP Sir Desmond Swayne, who won first place in the House of Commons' Private Members' Bill ballot, and will be debated in the House of Commons on 4 September.
The legislation aims to provide a strong legal foundation for information and support already being delivered through Best Start Family Hubs and the Healthy Babies programme.
The Bill would also require an assessment of the needs of infants, parents and carers, and prospective parents and carers.
Mr Mak said: "I'm backing the Babies Bill because every baby deserves the best start in life.
"Pregnancy to age two is a period of rapid development, when the foundations are laid for a child's health, relationships, language and future learning.
"We know that babies are more likely to thrive when their parents and carers receive trusted support early. That support is the foundation of a healthy society."
