Local MP Alan Mak joins Havant veterans at annual Army v Navy rugby showpiece

Local MP Alan Mak has joined a group of Havant veterans to attend the annual Army v Navy rugby showpiece.

He met up with the party from Havant's Royal British Legion branch to watch the big match at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham.

It was a special day for Havant as both team captains - Bombardier Pete Austin of Thorney Island-based 12 Regiment Royal Artillery for the Army and Royal Marines Captain Jarrard Hayler for the Navy - played together at Havant RFC earlier in their rugby careers.

Army v Navy is the biggest day in military sport and is also the nation's largest amateur sporting event.

The two teams, who have clashed on the rugby field for more than a century, were cheered on by many serving personnel and veterans in a crowd of more than 50,000.

After an exciting and closely-fought match, the coveted Babcock Trophy was eventually won 41-36 by the Navy, while the women's match staged afterwards ended in a dominant 78-0 victory for the Army.

Mr Mak, who is Vice President of the Havant Royal British Legion branch and a longstanding Legion volunteer, said: "I'm a big supporter of our Armed Forces and our veterans and it was great to join a party of local veterans from Havant at the Allianz Stadium for what is one of the most iconic events on the UK Armed Forces calendar.

"Well done to the Navy for getting the win and the bragging rights this time, but I'm sure the Army will be doing all they can to get the trophy back next year!"
