Local MP Alan Mak welcomes plan for new £12.8m Havant railway footbridge

Local MP Alan Mak has welcomed a plan for a new £12.8m railway footbridge in Havant.

Hampshire County Council has agreed in principle to replace the 79-year-old bridge at Havant Station.

The Council is expected to approve final design and construction plans on Monday 2 March.

The main work to replace the existing footbridge could begin in autumn 2026 and take up to 12 months to complete, with temporary diversions along nearby roads.

Mr Mak successfully campaigned in Westminster to secure some funding for the bridge from money that was previously allocated to the scrapped northern HS2 rail project.

The cost of the project will be met by a combination of a Department for Transport grant, developer contributions and money from Havant Borough Council’s Community Infrastructure Levy fund.

The replacement footbridge will be twice as wide and gentler ramps will improve accessibility by providing more space for cyclists, wheelchair users, people with mobility scooters, and those using prams and strollers.

Mr Mak said: "I'm pleased that it looks like work will begin on the new footbridge in the autumn.

"The present footbridge is clearly showing its age and has had to have temporary structural support added in order to be safe to use.

"The railway footbridge is an important part of Havant town centre and I look forward to the replacement providing a much better experience for users."
