Local MP Alan Mak has welcomed the Labour Government's U-turn on mandatory Digital ID.
It has now dropped plans that would have required people to sign up to a new Digital ID system in order to prove they had a right to work in the UK.
Instead checks that will use documents such as biometric passports are set to move fully online by 2029.
The Government's decision is the latest in a series of humiliating U-turns, including on business rates for pubs and the Family Farm Tax.
Mr Mak said: "Thank you to everyone who helped to force Keir Starmer into yet another U-turn, this time to abandon Labour's plan for mandatory Digital ID.
"I always maintained that it was a cynical attempt to distract people from Labour's failure to tackle illegal immigration, a stalling economy and Keir Starmer's ailing premiership.
"Mandatory Digital ID would not be an effective way to tackle illegal immigration. That is why I opposed the plan and voted against it."
