Local MP Alan Mak welcomes £500,000 funding for habitat creation schemes in Warblington and Hayling Island

Local MP Alan Mak has welcomed £500,000 of Environment Agency funding for habitat creation schemes in Warblington and Hayling Island.

The EA has confirmed that a total of £300,000 has been allocated for 2026/27 to a scheme at Northney Farm and £200,000 for a scheme at Conigar Point between Emsworth and Langstone, near Warblington.

The money will go towards appraisal of options of how best to create new habitats, plus outline design studies.

The schemes will be delivered by Coastal Partners,  a partnership formed by five coastal councils including Havant, in conjunction with the EA.

Habitat losses, predominantly saltmarsh, are caused by coastal squeeze resulting from rising sea levels against fixed coastal defences.

Mr Mak joined senior staff from Coastal Partners and the EA to visit the sites and find out how the funding will help to protect and expand high-tide roost sites for local waders and waterfowl.

He has consistently campaigned for more flood defence funding and worked closely with Coastal Partners on flooding and other environmental issues across the Havant Constituency.

Mr Mak said: "I was pleased to visit the sites for this important scheme that will help to create habitats for birds that are losing traditional roosting sites locally.

"I look forward to seeing the difference it makes in helping the bird population that is so much part of coastal life."
