Local MP Alan Mak pledges his continued support for Havant parkrun

Local MP Alan Mak has pledged his continued support for the Havant parkrun.

Mr Mak recently met parkrun Global CEO Elizabeth Duggan and they talked about the success of the weekly event held at Staunton Country Park.

Since it began in 2012, there have been more than 640 Havant parkruns and today each one regularly attracts 200-300 entrants.

Parkrun was created in the UK in 2004 and to start with times were written down on paper and washers were used as finish tokens.

But now there is electronic registration and a barcode result system for hundreds of thousands of runners each week.

The free, volunteer-led 5k and 2k community events take place in open spaces around the world.

Organisers say being part of parkrun, whether as an entrant or volunteer helper, provides a range of physical, social and mental health benefits.

Mr Mak said: "I've always been a big supporter of parkrun and have even taken part in the Havant event in the past.

"It's a great way to get out in the fresh air, keep fit and enjoy being part of what is a lovely social occasion each weekend.

"Whether you're a serious runner going for a personal best or a jogger just happy to get round, parkrun is for everyone and I hope it continues to go from strength to strength."
