Local MP Alan Mak visits Alfie's Arc in Leigh Park to launch special Christmas dinner and gift initiative

Local MP Alan Mak has visited Alfie's Arc in Leigh Park to launch a special Christmas dinner and gift initiative.

This year the community hub in the Greywell Shopping Centre has donated 150 parcels of Christmas dinner food and presents to local families.

Mr Mak launched the two-day giveaway, which also featured entertainment including singers and face-painting plus a raffle.

Alfie's Arc is a Community Interest Company inspired by the life of director Lianne Hutchins' son Alfie, who died of brain cancer. It is run by Lianne and her husband Carl.

Its mission is to help the local community by providing food parcels, offering mental health support and getting involved with community-based projects.

Alfie's Arc collects unsold food from supermarkets, then sorts and distributes it. It also runs a shop and cafe to help raise funds and the weekend event marked their first anniversary since opening.

Mr Mak said: "I was pleased to launch this excellent community initiative to help local families who may be struggling this Christmas.

"Alfie's Arc does some great work all year round and I'd like to thank Lianne and Carl and all the volunteers who give their time so generously."
