Local MP Alan Mak condemns Labour’s 2025 Budget as a £26 billion tax raid on working people

Local MP Alan Mak has condemned Labour’s 2025 Autumn Budget as a £26 billion tax raid on working people that punishes families, pensioners and savers across the Havant Constituency.

Rachel Reeves’ Budget includes 43 separate tax rises, pushing the tax burden to the highest level in British history and hitting households already struggling with the cost of living after nearly 18 months of Labour’s economic mismanagement.

The independent Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) has confirmed that growth is down, inflation is up, borrowing is up, and debt interest costs are rising under Labour’s plans.

Mr Mak said the Budget places a disproportionate burden on communities like those in the Havant constituency.

Mr Mak said:

“Labour’s Budget raises taxes to pay for more welfare spending, hurting workers, pensioners and savers in the Havant Constituency and our region. The Chancellor should resign or be sacked by Keir Starmer. I’m standing up for local people and I will vote against Labour’s tax rises to protect our community.”

Nationally, the Budget will go down as one of the largest assaults on working people in British history, who are being taxed so that a family on welfare can receive an average increase of £5000 to their benefits. Locally, that means:

  • Workers facing higher taxes on their incomes, savings and pensions
  • Retirees hit by taxation that undermines financial security
  • Small businesses and high street employers squeezed by higher costs and falling confidence
  • Families already managing tight budgets seeing prices rise again next year as inflation goes back up

Mr Mak said the Budget represents the wrong priorities for communities across the Havant Constituency:

“Labour has abandoned growth. Instead of backing people who work hard and want to get on, they have delivered a Benefits Budget paid for by higher taxes on families across the country.

Labour could have cut spending, reduced welfare costs, and backed workers – Instead, they chose to raid household budgets to fund spiralling welfare bills.”
