Local MP Alan Mak represents Havant Constituency at State Opening of Parliament

Local MP Alan Mak has represented the Havant Constituency at the State Opening of Parliament following the General Election.

The State Opening marks the start of a new session of Parliament and includes The King's Speech.

The King's Speech is delivered by His Majesty but written by the Government of the day.

Alan has strong reservations about several aspects of Labour’s King’s Speech including:

  • Labour’s reintroduction of “top-down” compulsory national targets issued by central Government forcing local councils to allow new houses to be built locally. Alan successfully campaigned to have top-down targets abolished by the last Conservative Government and is disappointed that Labour has reversed this policy.
  • Labour’s removal of the Veterans’ Minister from Cabinet, demoting the role to a junior ministerial position.
  • Labour’s failure to match the Conservative Party’s commitment to investing 2.5% of national income on defence to support our Armed Forces, which puts our country at risk.

Alan said, “As His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition, we will continue to hold the Labour Government to account on the promises they made to the British people. As your local MP I will continue to champion our area and stand up for the values and priorities of residents who re-elected me as their MP for the fourth time.”
