Local MP Alan Mak met Penny Emerit and inspected the new Emergency Care Centre being constructed at the Queen Alexandria Hospital site
Local MP Alan Mak spoke with Sean Kedzia, the General Manager of Urgent Care at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, about how the new facilities are part of a wider winter plan

Local MP Alan Mak has visited Queen Alexandra Hospital to welcome their new Emergency Care Centre which will provide extra capacity for patients this winter. Mr Mak also visited the site of a new building under construction which will increase bed capacity and is expected to open in December 2021.

Both new facilities will increase the Hospital’s emergency care capacity, meaning more patients can be admitted to hospital from ambulances quickly, and then receive high quality care.

Penny Emerit, the Chief Executive of Portsmouth Hospital Universities NHS Trust, showed Mr Mak the Emergency Care Centre, which will be holding patients whose situation is deemed urgent, but not critical. This reduces the demand for emergency care beds and frees capacity for those with critical needs.

Local MP Alan Mak said: “The new Emergency Care Centre is a positive new innovation which will ensure more patients are treated more quickly this winter when pressure on QA Hospital always rises. I was also pleased to see a new ward building being constructed which will add more patient beds increasing capacity at QA Hospital. I’ve campaigned for more NHS funding in Westminster, and I welcome these new facilities at our local hospital. Thanks to everyone at QA Hospital who work hard all year round, especially during winter time.”

Penny Emerit, Chief Executive of Portsmouth Hospital Universities NHS Trust, said: “Thank you to Alan Mak MP for visiting us again. It was great to have the opportunity to look around the new Emergency Care Centre, along with our new outpatient pharmacy and ward building, which will all provide additional capacity and are key to the delivery of our winter plan. It is important that everyone receives the right care in the right place to ensure that patients are as safe as they can be.”
