Local MP Alan Mak has welcomed £600,000 of Environment Agency funding for coastal flooding prevention on Hayling Island this year, following his campaigning.
The EA has allocated a total of £300,000 to a Flood and Coastal Risk Management Scheme at Eastoke and £300,000 on a similar scheme at Selsmore and Mengham during 2026/27.
The money will go towards appraisal of options of how best to reduce the risk from coastal erosion and flooding in these areas, plus outline design studies.
The schemes are being delivered by Coastal Partners, a partnership formed by five coastal councils including Havant, in conjunction with the EA, and are aimed at safeguarding property and critical infrastructure.
Mr Mak joined senior staff from Coastal Partners and the EA to visit the Hayling sites.
He has consistently campaigned for more flood defence funding and worked closely with Coastal Partners on flooding and other environmental issues across the Havant Constituency.
He said: "I continue to campaign for more funding for local flood defences. I was pleased to visit these sites on Hayling and find out about these important schemes that will help to protect the local community against flooding.
"I have spoken in Parliament on local flooding issues and I'll continue to speak up on behalf of local residents for Government funding to maintain and improve important flood defences."
