Local MP Alan Mak welcomes Nationwide's decision to maintain branch in Havant

Local MP Alan Mak has welcomed Nationwide's decision to maintain a branch presence in Havant.

He visited the Nationwide branch in West Street to meet manager Jed Whitecross and staff after the company announced it would keep its national network open through to at least 2030.

Mr Mak has been working to ensure residents in the Havant Constituency can continue to access in-person banking services when bank branches close.

In Havant the Halifax is scheduled to close on January 15, while Lloyds is due to shut four days later.

That will leave just Nationwide and Barclays, which operates out of Havant Library, as the only physical operations left in the town centre.

Although Barclays closed its East Street branch in 2022, Mr Mak managed to get the company to maintain a physical presence in the library at the Meridian Centre.

He also persuaded NatWest to launch a mobile pop-up banking service on Hayling and in Emsworth, which now have no permanent bank branches.

Mr Mak said: "I am pleased that Nationwide has committed to staying in Havant with a physical branch for at least another four years.

"This is very good news for all those local customers who still want to be able to use in-person banking services.

"I believe access to face-to-face banking is still important, especially for small businesses and older people in our community.

"That's why I'm working on ways to ensure residents will still be able to continue accessing in-person banking services when branches close."

He added: "When the Conservatives were in government we created Banking Hubs, allowing multiple banks to operate from one shared counter/premises. But the focus was on access to cash, rather than face-to-face banking.

"Now we need to take the next step and change the rules to allow Banking Hubs to provide face-to-face banking, which increases the chances of these Hubs opening in our community where there are no physical branches left."
