Local MP Alan Mak visited the Coastal Defence Scheme in Broadmarsh

Local MP Alan Mak has visited a £300,000 coastal defence scheme at Broadmarsh Coastal Park which protects large parts of the Havant Constituency including central Havant, Bedhampton, Langstone and Purbrook.

Highways England is spending £142 million across the South East of England to improve existing roads considered to be at risk. This funding has been spread across no fewer than 11 projects, of which the Broadmarsh scheme is one.

The Broadmarsh scheme has replaced 173 metres of defective coastal revetment, which is a form of retaining wall, between the A27 and Chaldock Lake. The shared cycle / footpath which runs on top of the revetment is at risk of being undermined by tidal and wave erosion.

At its closest point, the road connecting Havant and neighbouring Portsmouth to London sits just 32 metres (105 feet) from the water’s edge.

Local MP Alan Mak said: “Securing more infrastructure investment for our area is a key priority, so I welcome Government funding for stronger coastal defences at Broadmarsh which will protect homes and communities in Havant and the surrounding area.”
