Local MP Alan Mak urges Labour Government to listen as nearly 500 Havant Constituency residents sign petition to save Post Offices

Local MP Alan Mak has urged the Labour Government to listen after nearly 500 Havant Constituency residents signed a petition to save Post Offices.

A total of 480 residents are among 165,000 people who have signed the Conservatives' petition opposing mass Post Office closures currently being considered by the Government, including local post offices in the Havant Constituency.

Post Offices have been hit by business rates more than doubling and the National Insurance Jobs Tax under Labour.

This is despite the Labour manifesto committing to ‘strengthen the Post Office network'.

There are fears of a repeat of the savage cuts which took place under the last Labour Government when 7,166 Post Offices closed.

Mr Mak said: "The nine Post Offices in the Havant Constituency are far more than a place to send letters.

"They offer key services for local businesses, help those not online access government services and help to keep our high streets alive.

"But all that is being put at risk because of Labour’s decision to consider closing up to half of our Post Offices.

"That is why so many Havant Constituency residents have signed the Conservative petition, which has now been submitted, to try to get the Government to U-turn on their plans."

Mr Mak, who has also been running his own petition to save Post Offices, added: "We've already forced Keir Starmer to reinstate Winter Fuel Payments for vulnerable pensioners and to hold a national inquiry into grooming gangs.

"Now we want to force him to protect our local Post Offices too."
