Local MP Alan Mak speaks in Parliament on behalf of the Opposition to call out Government’s nine acts of "economic vandalism"

Local MP Alan Mak has spoken in Parliament on behalf of the Opposition and called out the Labour Government’s nine acts of 'economic vandalism'.

The Shadow Treasury Minister spoke from the Despatch Box during a debate on the Budget Responsibility Bill, which he said was designed to distract people from Labour's economic record and pave the way for tax rises in the autumn Budget.

Mr Mak said: "They’ve been in government for just nine weeks and have already carried out nine acts of economic vandalism."

He listed them as follows:

1. Removed the Winter Fuel Allowance from 10 million pensioners, despite promising not to.

2. Caved in to union paymasters by agreeing inflation-busting pay rises

3. Failed to commit to investing 2.5% of our national income on defence

4. Cancelled vital infrastructure upgrades on the A27 and A303

5. Cut funding for a vaccine manufacturing plant that would protect our health

6. Imposed Whitehall diktats to concrete over our green spaces

7. Stopped Conservative plans to build 40 new hospitals

8. Scrapped funding for a next-generation supercomputer, undermining our status as a tech superpower

9. Appointed Labour donors to senior civil service jobs without open competition

Mr Mak added: "But we know that there’s more economic harm to come, with Labour’s autumn budget set to raise taxes.

"During the election campaign Labour promised over 50 times not to raise people’s taxes and now they’re planning to do just that. It will be hardworking people, pensioners and businesses who will pay the price.

"People can never trust Labour with our economy. They will raise taxes and cut investment at every opportunity. Their honeymoon is well and truly over."
