There was a special wedding anniversary surprise for a Havant couple when they travelled up to London for a tour of Parliament and to meet their local MP Alan Mak.
Falklands veteran Peter Adams and his wife Sandie had joined the latest coach trip of Havant constituents to enjoy a guided tour of the House of Commons, House of Lords and other parts of the historic Parliamentary estate.
The group then took part in a Q&A session with Mr Mak, after which he presented the couple with a bottle of House of Commons wine to mark their 56th wedding anniversary just a few days earlier.
Peter joined the Royal Navy in 1963 and as a teenager was part of the armed guard for Winston Churchill's funeral in 1965. He met Sandie on a night out in Southsea while he was serving in HMS Manxman and the couple got married at St Faith's Church, Havant in 1969.
Peter went on to serve in HMS Diomede during the Falklands conflict in 1982 before leaving the service and helping son Simon start a printing business in Southsea. Sandie worked in catering and as a secretary. The couple have two grandchildren, Faith and Ethan, and have lived in Langstone for 40 years.
Sandie said: "Alan’s tour was really interesting. The guide was very knowledgeable and we were with a great group of local people. Then receiving the wedding anniversary gift from Alan at the end was a lovely surprise."
Mr Mak said: "It was a pleasure to welcome Peter and Sandie to Parliament, wish them a happy anniversary and give them a gift to mark the occasion.
"The tours are proving really popular and I'd encourage more residents from the Havant Constituency to take part!"
