Local MP Alan Mak praises work of Hayling Island lifeboat crews in Parliament

Local MP Alan Mak has praised the work of Hayling Island's lifeboat crews in Parliament.

He spoke in a Westminster Hall debate on government support for independent lifeboats.

Mr Mak said in Parliament: "In my Havant Constituency we are fortunate to have both the Hayling Island RNLI lifeboats, funded by the RNLI, and the Hayling Island Coastguard Rescue Team, funded through the Department for Transport.

"Together they do outstanding work in our community and around Hayling. Will my Honourable Friend and the Minister join me in thanking the support staff and crews on Hayling Island?"

Hayling Island Lifeboat Station is based at Sandy Point and is one of more than 230 stations in the UK.

It was established in 1865 and carries out rescues in the eastern end of the Solent.

It operates two inshore lifeboats and crews have been presented with 30 awards for gallantry.

Hayling Island Coastguard Rescue Team is a volunteer group that responds to 999 calls for the Coastguard to assist with maritime and coastal emergencies.

They operate as part of HM Coastguard and are supported by the national Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Fareham.
