Local MP Alan Mak meets Amazon apprentices for National Apprenticeship Week

Local MP Alan Mak has met a group of apprentices during a visit to the UK headquarters of internet retail giant Amazon.

He also talked to senior company representatives about Amazon's investment in the UK and the company's delivery station in Havant, passing on residents’ views about the site.

The 600,000 sq ft, 15-storey Amazon UK HQ in London is home to thousands of employees working in different areas of the global business.

Amazon plans to invest £8bn up to 2028 in building, operating and maintaining data centres in the UK.

This investment is part of the company's long-term commitment to supporting growth and productivity across the country and is estimated to contribute £14bn to the UK economy.

Mr Mak, who visited in his role as Shadow Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology ahead of National Apprenticeship Week, said: “I enjoyed meeting Amazon’s apprentices. I've always been a big supporter of apprenticeships as a way of ensuring our workforce is equipped with the skills they need for the future."

This year Mr Mak will be holding his 10th annual Jobs, Apprenticeships and Careers Fair on Friday 19 September at Bedhampton Community Centre.

He explained: "Every year I bring together employers and organisations able to offer work and training opportunities with local people who are seeking employment, a change of career or career advice.

"Admission is free, you can drop in at any point during the Fair and stay for as long or as little as you want.

"I am especially keen to encourage our local young people and those starting out in the world of work to attend the Fair, as this is a good opportunity to engage with many employers who can offer job and apprenticeship opportunities locally."
