Local MP Alan Mak joins QA Chief Executive Penny Emerit at the new Emergency Department’s construction site.

Local MP Alan Mak has joined Queen Alexandra Hospital’s Chief Executive Penny Emerit to launch construction of the hospital's new £58million Emergency Department, funded by central Government.

The new Emergency Department, which Mr Mak has worked alongside MP colleagues to secure funding for, will be built on the site of the former east car park. It is a major new addition to the Hospital, which serves residents from all parts of the Havant Constituency and the wider south Hampshire. The Department will feature state-of-the-art equipment and technology, as well as increased capacity to handle a greater number of patients.

Local MP Alan Mak said "Having successfully campaigned in Westminster to secure £58million of Government funding for QA’s new Emergency Department, I’m delighted to help launch construction. The new facility will boost capacity and reduce the time patients spend in ED with more treatment rooms and a specially designed entrance to enable a faster turnaround of ambulances, getting them back on the road more quickly. As a result patients from the Havant Constituency and the surrounding area will receive safer and more timely care.”

Penny Emerit, the CEO of the Portsmouth Hospitals Trust, said, “This is another major milestone in our work to improve emergency care for our community. This new facility provides a great opportunity to redesign our urgent and emergency services to further respond to the needs of our patients from across the Hampshire and South East region, including Havant. We want to ensure that we provide the best possible services for everyone we care for.”

Construction of the new emergency department is expected to take approximately 22 months and is set to be completed by winter 2024.

Queen Alexandra Hospital serves the entire Havant Constituency and is committed to providing exceptional care to the community. Alan Mak MP maintains regular contact with the Hospital’s management team.

Some of the new features of the Emergency Department include:

  • Doubling the current resus capacity from four adult bays to eight for patients needing treatment for critical conditions
  • Two further paediatric resus bays for children and increased privacy for patients with treatment in single bay rooms.
  • Faster access to radiology teams for scans and tests
  • A designated ED drop off zone with disabled car parking
  • An accredited Changing Places accessible facility
  • Dedicated rest areas for staff.
  •

A virtual tour of the facility is available via a fly through video to see how the design will help staff to work in a more streamlined way, continue to improve patient safety and provide the best possible care.
