Local MP Alan Mak has congratulated Emsworth resident Lord Richards on being appointed a Field Marshal by His Majesty The King.
He is now known as Field Marshal The Lord Richards of Herstmonceaux GCB CBE DSO DL after being appointed to this honorary rank in the British Army.
The title of Field Marshal is the highest possible Army rank and recognises Lord Richards' distinguished service and commitment to the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and overseas territories.
He was formerly the Chief of the Defence Staff, head of the British Armed Forces.
Mr Mak said: "I warmly congratulate Lord Richards on being appointed Field Marshal. This is fitting recognition for a lifetime of service and leadership, and it is great for Emsworth and our community that Lord Richards remains active locally as well as nationally.
"I have valued Lord Richards' insights and support over the years, and I am delighted he has been recognised by His Majesty The King."
