Local MP Alan Mak has challenged the Labour Government to rule out tax rises in the Autumn Budget.

He spoke in Parliament during Treasury Question Time and told Chancellor John Healey: "This week Arthur Laffer, economic adviser to three former US Presidents, said Britain is being taxed to death under this Labour Government.

"Will the Chancellor rule out tax rises in the Budget?"

The Autumn Budget will be announced by the Chancellor on 28 October and Mr Mak, a former Treasury and Business Minister, said: "Despite the Labour Party's manifesto pledging not to increase taxes on 'working people', this Labour Government is responsible for pushing the tax burden to the highest level in British history. This has really hit households who are already struggling with the cost of living.

"People are paying the price for Labour's economic mismanagement and the Government needs to recognise that a fundamental aspect of growth is lower taxes."
