Havant is one of the top 20 places in the country for superfast broadband availability, research from the House of Commons Library has found.

The constituency, which includes Havant, Langstone, Bedhampton, Emsworth, Hayling Island, Leigh Park, Purbrook, Widley and Stakes, was rated as one of the best places in the country for internet access, with close to 99 per cent of houses able to access superfast broadband.

In addition, average download speeds in the constituency are 39 per cent higher than the national average, ranking Havant inside the top ten fastest places in the South East.

Only around 110 lines – or just 0.3% of the homes in the constituency - are currently unable to receive 10Mbps, which the regulator Ofcom regards as 'decent broadband'.

It means Havant has already achieved the manifesto commitment by the Government to ensure that 95 per cent of homes across the country have access to superfast broadband.

Havant MP Alan Mak commented that the Government rollout of superfast broadband had delivered a significant boost to local economies across the country, including creating 50,000 new local jobs and generated an additional £8.9 billion in turnover.

Alan said: “I am delighted that Havant has been rated as one of the fastest places in the country when it comes to internet speed. Connectivity now plays a crucial role in our day-to-day lives, whether it’s working from home, running a business, ordering the shopping or watching a film, so it’s vital that the Government ensures every home has access to high speed internet. As one of the most reliable places in the country for superfast broadband we are sending a message to companies looking to invest that Havant is open for business.”

He added: “With the Government bringing in the Universal Service Obligation, which will give everyone the legal right to high speed broadband by 2020, I look forward to seeing the final few houses in the constituency being upgraded. That will mean that no-one is left behind, and that all homes and businesses in the constituency will have the connectivity they need for the digital age.”
