Havant MP Alan Mak has opened the new synthetic tennis at the Avenue Lawn Tennis, Squash and Fitness Club at a gala open day. Newly entrusted President, Pete Davies, thanked Mr Mak for his ongoing support and looked forward to an exciting future with the club’s increased surface capacity.
The Club, which dates back to 1902, was voted Lawn Tennis Association Club of 1996 and provides high-quality facilities for a range of sports and encouraging participation by all ages and abilities. Ahead of this month’s senior tennis tournament, Mr Mak was guest of hounour at the opening of the new court – featuring a synthetic surface to enable play year-round.
The new courts brought the club total up to 24, which are used for a mixture of regional tournaments, weekend meetings, children’s coaching and casual play. Members also enjoy an array of weekly classes and groups, from squash coaching to Pilates and social bridge.
Following the opening, Mak said: “I’m delighted to open the new synthetic courts at the Avenue Club. As local MP, supporting local sports clubs is one of my priorities as it is an excellent way to stay fit, healthy, and engaged in the local community.”
Mak added: “I urge members to make the most of these excellent new facilities, which enable year-round play and will increase the club’s capacity to teach those of all ages and abilities.”
Club President Peter Davies said: “Thanks to Alan for coming along to open our new courts, which add an extra buzz to the exciting programme that the club is looking forward to over the next few months. Whether it is first-time players or seasoned professionals, we welcome local residents to come down and pick up a racket with us.”
Havant MP Mak is a keen sportsman, and has supported local teams since his election last year. In November he was named as Vice President of Havant Rugby Club was delighted to accept Honorary Membership of the Havant Hockey Club in January 2016. Mak scored and was awarded man-of-the-match on his debut for the club.
