Local MP Alan Mak has welcomed an announcement by the Government that Hampshire Police will receive up-to 8 per cent in additional funding next year.

Alan has been working with the Government to ensure that local police services receive additional funding. That work has proved to be successful with the Home Secretary and Police Minister confirming that Hampshire Police will be able to raise funding by £25million in 2018/19.

This comes after Alan invited the Police Minister Nick Hurd to the constituency earlier this year to discuss local policing needs on Hayling Island, and then meeting the new Home Secretary Sajid Javid.

Of the new funding for Hampshire Police, £7million will come from central Government grant funding, while £18million can be raised through an increase in the council tax precept of £2 a month for a typical Band D household.

Reacting to the news, Alan welcomed the additional funding, and called on Hampshire’s directly elected Police and Crime Commissioner to ensure he makes full use of the extra money that will be available.

Alan Mak MP said: “We all recognise the vital work that the Police do in our community to keep us safe. That’s why it’s right that the Government has given individual police commissioners the ability to raise more money for local policing. An additional £25million for Hampshire Police will mean more money for officers, detectives and PCSOs. I welcome this additional money and urge the Police and Crime Commissioner to make maximum use of this extra ability to decide our local policing needs.”
