Local MP Alan Mak helps to secure continued payment for Hayling Island Coastguard Rescue Team

Local MP Alan Mak has helped to secure continued payment for the Hayling Island Coastguard Rescue Team.

After he voiced his concern in Parliament over potential pay cuts for Coastguard Rescue Officers, the Government has abandoned the plan in the final U-turn of Keir Starmer's Premiership.

Mr Mak spoke in the House of Commons and said there were fears that limiting volunteers to only being able to claim expenses would severely affect recruitment and retention locally.

CROs currently get £11 an hour for answering emergency callouts but the Labour Government proposed that they receive no pay, just expenses from September.

Now CROs will continue to receive payments for training and callouts while the Department for Transport considers the future of the service.

CROs respond to incidents involving people in danger, missing persons, flooding, severe weather and other emergencies.

Mr Mak said: "This is a victory for Hayling CROs and others across the country. They are highly-trained emergency responders who give up their time to keep others safe. They do not do it for the money, but the modest payments they receive help make service possible alongside work, family life and other commitments."

He added: "It was very concerning to hear that moving to an expenses-only volunteer model could deter people from becoming or remaining CROs and I raised the issue with the Maritime Minister.

"This reprieve is important, but it is not the end of the matter. The Government must now work properly with CROs on a long-term model which respects their service, rewards the hours they give and keeps our coastal communities safe."
