Alan Mak has pledged to continue working hard for Havant if re-elected as MP on Thursday 8 June, after members of the local Conservative Association re-selected him to contest the General Election.
The Conservative Candidate said it had been a privilege to serve as Havant MP for the past two years and looks forward to highlighting his achievements on the doorstep in the coming weeks.
Highlights so far include organising several community events backed by the News including two Jobs, Apprenticeships and Careers Fairs, which have helped numerous residents into work; the first Older Persons Information Fair on Hayling Island, which attracted more than 1,000 visitors; and the Havant Small Business Awards that showcased some of the best shops and local businesses in the area.
Mr Mak has made boosting the local economy his top priority over the past two years, promoting Havant as a great place to start and grow a business. He’s succeeded in raising the area’s profile in Parliament as a national centre for the jobs and businesses of the future, in areas like 3D printing and advanced manufacturing. In addition, he’s visited many major employers in the area such as Lockheed Martin, Lewmar, Apollo Fire Detectors and Langstone Technology Park to understand the needs of local firms. For budding entrepreneurs Mr Mak recently secured £250,000 of government money to launch his Havant Business Support Fund which helps local people start or grow a business.
Nationally, he said Conservatives have delivered lower taxes for working people, more jobs and apprenticeships, and a stronger economy . The number of Jobseekers’ Allowance claimants in Havant is down by over 50% since 2010.
He said: “As Havant’s MP over the last two years I’ve work hard helping residents, attending community events, and organising major initiatives like my Jobs Fair and Small Business Awards to support our residents and businesses. I’m delighted that Havant Conservatives have re-selected me for the general election, and I look forward to delivering a positive message about my record and work for local residents. If re-elected I’ll continue to work hard for residents across the Havant constituency.”
If re-elected Mr Mak has also reiterated his commitment to delivering Brexit, and backing the Prime Minister Theresa May as she starts negotiations with the European Union.
He added: “Every vote for Theresa May’s Conservatives in Havant and across Britain gives the Government a stronger hand as we start Brexit negotiations. This election is about backing our Prime Minister, giving her the strongest possible support to get the best deal for Britain from the EU.
“I’ve discussed Havant’s local priorities with the Prime Minister, and I’ve brought the Brexit Minister Robin Walker to Havant to meet local business and community leaders. People voted for Brexit, and I’ll work hard locally and in Westminster to make it a success for everyone.”
Havant Conservative Association Chairman, Councillor Mike Fairhurst said he was delighted that members had re-selected Mr Mak as the Conservative Candidate.
He said: “For the last two years Alan has been an energetic and hardworking local MP with a strong community focus, delivering results for the Havant constituency. We’re running a positive campaign highlighting Alan’s work locally and the achievements of the Conservative Government nationally. I hope residents will support us on 8 June to deliver a successful Brexit and ensure we have an effective voice for Havant in Westminster.”
