Local MP Alan Mak has praised the tireless efforts of the North East Hayling Residents’ Association (NEHRA) after he joined the group for their AGM.
Mr Mak spoke at the NEHRA meeting on Friday 14 May as the association reflects on twelve months of community engagement, fund raising and local campaigning, whilst also outlining plans for the future.
The Havant MP listened to residents discuss current issues such as speed limits on the island and the impact of the English Coastal Path, the availability of broadband internet, and plans to promote tourism in the area with the summer season approaching.
Discussions also included Mak’s ongoing campaign to save the Hayling Island Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC). Mr Mak informed the AGM of the meeting he is chairing between petition organiser Ms Wiltshire, Cllr Rob Humby, Hampshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, and local councillors.
The public consultation over the future of the tip remains open until 25 May and can be accessed, alongside links to the residents’ petition, via Mr Mak’s website. The Havant MP told NEHRA that his meeting with Cllr Humby will ensure residents’ views would be heard before the local authority makes its final decision.
At the AGM, NEHRA members also discussed plans for an exciting range of upcoming events across the summer calendar. Dates for the diary include celebrations for the Queen’s 90th Birthday Party on Sunday 12th June, and the North Hayling Fete and Car Boot Sale on Sunday 17th July which Mak will open as local MP and guest of honour.
Following the meeting, Alan Mak said: “It was a pleasure to sit down with NEHRA at their annual meeting for the second year running. It is terrific to see such a healthy level of engagement and activity from members of the local community.”
The Havant MP added: “I would like to thank the NEHRA and all residents for their support with local campaigns such as Hayling Tip, and my own projects such as the Havant Small Business Awards. The Residents’ Association does a great job tackling important local issues, and keeping me and councillors informed.”
NEHRA chairman Derek Bowerman commented: “We were delighted to welcome our local MP Alan Mak to the AGM. It’s great to see Alan continuing his strong support for local residents and businesses in North East Hayling and around the constituency. We have a busy schedule of events with summer approaching, and NEHRA are looking forward to an active future with Alan’s backing.”
