Alan Mak wins Havant's US Style Open Primary selection for 2015 MP Candidate
Havant voters selected businessman Alan Mak in Saturday’s US Style Open Primary to be the Conservative Party's candidate for the 2015 general election.
The US Open Primary format, the first of its kind ever to be held in Havant, meant all voters in Havant of every political persuasion were able to attend and vote.
Nearly 200 voters turned out on Saturday 25 October 2015, including Labour and Liberal Democrat politicians, residents from across the Havant Constituency and 60 members of Havant Conservative Association. Ten students from Havant Sixth Form College studying A level politics volunteered to count the votes and witness the historic event held at Oaklands Secondary School, ably chaired by former Conservative MP, Rob Hayward OBE.
Four hugely impressive candidates, from almost 100 applicants, each answered questions for thirty minutes from Rob Hayward and the audience. Alan Mak emerged victorious with a clear and decisive majority.
Alan will contest the general election on 7 May 2015 with the full support of the Havant Conservative Associatio, and the backing of local residents.
Havant’s current MP, David Willetts, congratulated Alan at the end of the selection meeting.
Tim Lines, Chairman, Havant Conservatives, said: “This Primary was local democracy at its best. Havant voters regardless of which party they support, chose to give up their Saturday and select the next Conservative candidate for the 2015 general election. The People have spoken, and Alan Mak will be the Conservative candidate. Alan is an outstanding candidate, who performed very well against very tough competition. Alan will bring strong leadership, energy and vision to Havant. Havant Conservatives are completely behind Alan and will campaign hard for him to be the next MP for Havant.”
Alan Mak, Havant Conservatives’ 2015 Parliamentary Candidate, said: “I am honoured and delighted to be chosen by Havant residents to be their prospective MP candidate for 2015. Havant is a fantastic constituency, and I’m looking forward to talking to even more residents, businesses, schools, charities and councillors to hear their views about how we can make it even better.”
“My campaign will focus on securing Havant’s future by strengthening the local economy, protecting public services, supporting local schools & colleges to improve our skills base, and promoting Havant’s tourism sector.”
