Small business owner, investor and children’s campaigner Alan Mak said he was “delighted and honoured” to have been selected by the Havant Conservative Party’s Executive Committee to contest the Open Primary Final where local residents will choose Havant’s next MP. The Open Primary Final takes place on Saturday 25 October at Oaklands Catholic School from 2PM.
Commenting on his selection Mak said, “I’m delighted and honoured to be selected by the local Conservatives to contest the Open Primary to be Havant’s next MP. My priority is to meet and listen to local people and work closely with local councillors. I want to be an energetic local champion and a strong national voice for Havant.”
Mak said that economic growth, jobs and living standards were his top priority: “My family ran a small shop for over 20 years, and my business today revolves around helping young entrepreneurs and high street names like Argos and Halfords grow and create new jobs. I’ll use my expertise to make the Market Parade, West of Waterlooville and Dunsbury Hill Farm re-generation projects a success and attract new employers to create good jobs so local living standards rise”.
Mak added: “Havant is a town on the rise, and as your local MP I will lead efforts to make it an even better place to live, work, visit and invest in. Apart from leading local regeneration efforts, I will also back local schools & colleges to raise standards and boost skills. I will be based in Havant and use my experience as a business leader, children’s campaigner and school governor to build on David Willetts’ great work”.
Education and skills is another of Mak’s passions and key local priorities. As a school governor and a member of Cambridge University’s Alumni Advisory Board, Mak is well-placed to lead efforts to boost local schools & colleges, and improve the local skills base. He is also President & Trustee of Magic Breakfast, an award-winning charity that feeds 8,000 hungry primary school children across the country so they do not start school too hungry to learn. He was selected to carry the Olympic Torch for his Magic Breakfast work. Alan Mak is also a schools careers mentor for Speakers for Schools, the charity created by BBC Business Editor Robert Peston, to match Britain’s most successful business and public life leaders with state secondary schools for mentoring and inspirational talks.
“Havant has great teachers and students, but our schools and colleges have historically been underfunded compared to other parts of the country. I will campaign to change that. We need to equip everyone in Havant, particularly our young people, with the skills and knowledge to compete and win in the modern economy. I’m passionate about giving everyone in Havant of all ages a great education because inspirational teachers and schools transformed my own life and future.”
Mak is also committed to protecting the local environment and coastline. He commented: “Havant has beautiful coasts and harbours which I will protect and promote. Hayling Island is a beautiful rural retreat with a successful visitor economy that I will back. It’s an outstanding destination for anyone interested in relaxing, walking or sports on the water. It also has a rich history we should promote, including playing a key role in preparing for the D-Day Landings, whilst sailing on Langstone or Chichester Harbour is always great fun! ”
