Local MP Alan Mak led a Havant export drive last week by bringing the Department for International Trade export roadshow to the Langstone Technology Park.
The mobile exporting hub brought together local firms with an interest in trading abroad and expert Government advisors. Firms were able to ask the trade advisors questions, get tips on exporting and network with other businesses.
The Routes to Market Roadshow came to Havant at the special request of Mr Mak, who has made boosting exports one of his top priorities. It comes after a trade mission he led to Hong Kong last year to support local businesses including home appliance maker Kenwood and Lewmar, a manufacturer of small parts for boats based on Southmoor Lane.
Mr Mak said: “Backing our local economy is my top priority so I was delighted to bring the exporting roadshow to Havant, and showcase the work being done by the Government to boost our exports. Havant has a great heritage as an exporting centre, with firms such as Apollo Fire Detectors, Eaton, Lockheed Martin and Kenwood all based in the area. I want that to continue long into the future, which is why I am keen to offer support to smaller firms thinking of exporting.
“Many of the companies which came to the event had never exported before and the advice they received will be invaluable as they look to grow in the future.”
The Department of Trade is currently promoting the Exporting is GREAT campaign, which aims to boost the UK’s overseas sales.
Tom Fourcade, Department for International Trade, Director Export and Investments for Southern England, said: “The Routes to Market Roadshow in Havant demonstrated just how much potential local companies in the food & drink, retail and consumer goods sectors have on the international stage.
“I’d urge ambitious Havant businesses to look at the Exporting is GREAT website - www.exportingisgreat.gov.uk - to apply for real-time global export opportunities, as well as access expert advice, trade services, training and events. The demand for your product is out there and you could reap the benefits of exporting and compete for business all over the world.”
