Local MP Alan Mak has visited Mill Hill Primary School in Stakes to speak to Year 6 pupils about local issues and national politics.

Mr Mak visited the Ladybirds class of Year 6 pupils to field questions as part of their “Yes Minister” programme of democracy-related events. The schoolchildren asked Mr Mak a range of questions on topics such as being an MP, working with the Prime Minister, and local issues in the Stakes and Purbrook area.

Regularly scheduled school visits to the Parliamentary estate have been on hold since March 2020 owing to COVID-19 restrictions, though current plans set out by the Speaker of the House of Commons Lindsey Hoyle will see school tours resume in February. Mr Mak is committed to engaging regularly with local pupils and decided to visit the school when he heard that the pupils’ tour of Parliament has been postponed.

Megan Gillett, Ladybirds class teacher, said: “Thank you to Alan Mak MP for visiting our class today. The children were so excited to meet their local MP after learning all about the Houses of Parliament and politics in our ‘Yes Minister’ sessions. It really brought the topic of politics alive for the children.”

Local MP Alan Mak said: “I was delighted to visit the Mill Hill Primary School again to meet the Ladybirds class and field questions on a range of topics. We discussed everything from my work in Parliament to local issues. The children were full of energy and enthusiasm for politics, and I look forward to seeing them in the future in Parliament.”
