Local MP Alan Mak has visited Crookhorn College in Stakes Ward to engage local students with an interest in Parliament and politics during UK Parliament Week.
UK Parliament Week is an annual event taking place from 1-7 November this year, which engages people from across the UK with their UK Parliament, explores what it means to them and empowers them to get involved.
Mr Mak took questions from 25 students who had been selected by their teachers on account of their excellent behaviour and attitude to learning. Questions ranged from issues such as climate change and nuclear power, to extending the franchise and Alan’s role as our local MP and as a Government Minister.
Local MP Alan Mak said: “I was delighted to be visit Crookhorn College again, this time to talk to students during Parliament Week. It is vital that we engage young people locally to discuss how our laws are made, and to empower them to step up and be heard. Events like Parliament Week are helping to inspire the next generation of politicians to embark on their careers.”
Vicci Masson, Head of History at Crookhorn College, said “I want to thank Alan for lending his time to visit and engaging our students in a discussion on the issues of the day. Parliament Week is a great event held every year that encourages students to participate in our democracy. The students here at Crookhorn were very interested to hear from Alan, and it was great to see them getting involved and asking him questions.”
