Local MP Alan Mak travelled to Twickenham Stadium to support Havant Rugby Football Club as they took on Driffield RFC in the final of the Papa Johns Community Cup.
The Club’s first 15 men’s squad had won their semi-final game against Heath RUFC, which unexpectedly gave the team the opportunity to contest the final at Twickenham Stadium, the home of English rugby.
The Papa Johns Community Cup was conceived following a major restructuring of the club rugby season which saw the biggest changes to the men’s leagues in 30 years. This restructure was a response to club and player needs, as well as changes in wider society.
Alan met Havant RFC President Jonathan Mangnall at the ground, where he passed on his best wishes and good luck to the team ahead of the game. Sadly the game ended with Havant losing 34-17.
Local MP Alan Mak said: “I was delighted to visit Twickenham to cheer on Havant in the Papa John’s Community Cup Final. Although the result was not what we wanted, the team have had a fantastic season and I know the whole community will be proud of them for coming so far.”
Will Knights, the team’s Head Coach, said: “We have loved every minute of this cup competition and to end such a great season here at Twickenham is just unreal. The support for the team today was so brilliant.”
