Local MP Alan Mak has successfully campaigned for a free-to-use cash machine in Denvilles following a request to LINK, the UK’s cash machine network operator.
The cash machine, located at the Coop at 40 Snowberry Crescent, Denvilles, Havant PO9 2FE, was previously charging customers a fee to make withdrawals, but now residents can access cash for free following Alan’s successful campaign.
Alan Mak MP submitted a formal request to LINK for free cash to be made available in the area, under LINK’s community request initiative.
The Denvilles cash machine is part of the LINK Scheme, which virtually connects all the UK’s cash machines and provides communities with access to cash through services such as cashback at retailers’ tills and banking hubs.
Local MP Alan Mak said: "I’m delighted that my campaign for a free-to-use cash machine in Denvilles has been successful, with LINK accepting my formal request. This free machine will be a valuable service for local residents and businesses who can all access their cash more easily and without charge."
In Parliament, Alan was a member of the Bill Committee that scrutinised and approved the new Financial Services and Markets Act 2023 which created a new legal right of free access to cash for millions of people. The move will mean that all, including the most vulnerable in society, can continue to withdraw and deposit cash for free.
The financial services regulator will have the legal power to preserve access to cash – free to consumers at the point of withdrawal or deposit – for those who need it. The Act requires the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to seek to ensure reasonable provision of free cash access services for current accounts of personal customers as part of the FCA’s wider duty of seeking to ensure reasonable access to cash
Under industry arrangements, any community that submits a request for a review or that is facing the closure of a key cash service will have its needs independently assessed by LINK, who will consider whether additional cash services are required in that community. https://www.link.co.uk/consumers/request-access-to-cash/
LINK has recommended that over 100 communities should receive additional shared cash services following reviews of local cash access needs.
