Local MP Alan Mak lights candle in remembrance of Holocaust victims

Local MP Alan Mak has visited Havant Cemetery to light a candle in memory of the lives lost during the Holocaust and to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day.

The cemetery is home to a special memorial and commemorative plaque which marks the area as being a space for reflection and remembrance of the atrocities committed during the Holocaust.

Every year Mr Mak visits the memorial to pay his own respects and light a candle in remembrance, and encourages other local residents to light a candle of their own and place it in their window at 8pm on Holocaust Memorial Day (on 27 January 2024).

This year Alan also signed the Holocaust Memorial Trust’s Book of Commitment in Parliament, along with other MPs, to reaffirm his commitment to ensuring that the atrocities of the Holocaust are never repeated again, and that today’s children learn of these evil acts so that future generations may learn from it.

Local MP Alan Mak said: “We must never forget the atrocities committed during the Holocaust and honour the memory of those who suffered and died. It is our duty to educate future generations about this dark chapter in human history so that such a tragedy can never happen again”.

Holocaust Memorial Day is observed annually on 27 January and is a time for people around the world to come together and remember the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.
