Local MP Alan Mak has taken part in a digital surgery for students at Oaklands Catholic School in the Stakes Ward of the Havant Constituency following a collaboration with The Politics Project.
During the surgery, students asked Mr Mak a wide range of questions about local and national issues, as well as the day-to-day experiences of being an MP and Government Minister. Alan Mak MP also asked the students about their impressions of the work conducted by Members of Parliament.
The Politics Project’s Digital Surgeries programme is a political literacy initiative run in schools across the UK that equips students with knowledge, skills and confidence to engage in politics and in their local communities. The programme is designed to build trust between young people and politicians by letting them have direct conversations about issues that matter.
Alan Mak MP said: “Today’s young people will be tomorrow’s politicians and decision makers, and so it is very important to me that students who take an interest in politics can access lawmakers and be heard. That’s why I was delighted to work with The Politics Project to host this digital surgery, which I thoroughly enjoyed.”
Catherine Wilkinson, Head of History at Oaklands, said: ““We had a really interesting session with our local MP Alan Mak, co-ordinated by The Politics Project. He gave our students the opportunity to ask him lots of questions and gave us a real understanding of the world of Politics.”
Rosa Slater, Programme Lead at The Politics Project, said: “A massive thank you to Oaklands Catholic School and Alan Mak MP for engaging in a new way through our Digital Surgeries programme. The students asked some very interesting and well-researched questions. It was excellent to hear Alan Mak’s substantial answers whether that be about his favourite historical prime minister or which football team he supports! We want to ensure that every young person during their time at school has the chance to partake in a meaningful conversation with a politician. This Digital Surgery was another step in helping us achieve that aim.”
