Local MP Alan Mak has called for veteran and armed forces rail discounts to be protected by law.
There are fears that the Veterans Railcard and HM Forces Railcard could be removed in future unless they are guaranteed by legislation.
Mr Mak has now launched a petition to get the Labour Government to make the railcards a legal right.
Labour’s Railways Bill, which will restructure and renationalise the railway, fails to protect the Veterans Railcard and HM Forces Railcard as it does not enshrine them into law.
Mr Mak said: "Labour have repeatedly voted against guaranteeing both the Veterans Railcard and HM Forces Railcard in law. The Government has argued that legislation is unnecessary, but what if it decides to change its mind at a later date, which it has already done on many issues?
"I’m a strong supporter of our Armed Forces and veterans. I believe their service and sacrifice should be recognised and an important way of doing this is by ensuring these railcards are fully protected in law."
The Veterans Railcard was introduced in 2020 by the last Conservative government, enabling eligible UK veterans to get a third off fares. The HM Forces railcard also offers discounts to serving personnel and their families.
Mr Mak added: "If you want to see the Veterans Railcard and HM Forces Railcard guaranteed in law, please sign my petition."
