Local MP Alan Mak has pledged his continued support for flood defence at Eastoke on Hayling Island.
The Environment Agency recently confirmed that £563,000 has been allocated to the South Hayling Beach Management Plan for 2026/27 and will be used to investigate and address local drainage, flood risks, and infrastructure resilience. Mr Mak joined senior staff from Coastal Partners and the EA to visit Eastoke to see what is planned.
The South Hayling Beach Management Plan is being funded until 2029 at a total cost of £5.1m.
Mr Mak has consistently supported funding bids to central government to continue this flood protection work beyond 2029, including adding to the existing shingle-based flood defence work with a broader range of defence measures.
Shingle creates an important barrier that helps to protect more than 750 homes and businesses on South Hayling.
Beach replenishment is carried out at Eastoke by contractors working for Coastal Partners, a partnership of five local councils including Havant which manages flood risk and flood defences.
Mr Mak said: "I welcome the allocation of funding for a drainage study at Eastoke and I’ll continue to speak up for Government funding for important flood defence work on Hayling including at Eastoke. This is a top priority for me on behalf of local residents."
